I can't seem to remove an item from the search bar in the center of my Firefox home page. I usually can by typing in one letter, highlighting the item in the drop down and then pushing delete. When I do that now, it seems to delete the item but when I again type in one letter in the search bar, it again shows the item back in the drop down.

That are likely search suggestions if you mean the about:home page because this page has autocomplete=off and thus shouldn't save search terms that you type.
