Recently I received a message to update Java. When I downloaded the new version of Java I couldn't get it to install. I downloaded it again and got the same result. It was downloaded from https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp as I've done several times before. The file I downloaded is jre-8u141-windows-x64.

I run Windows 7 (64 bit) and Firefox 50.0.1 (64 bit) on my computer. Does Firefox still use Java.

Try using Internet Explorer 11 to work with the Java site.

Your Firefox identified itself as version 54, not version 50. So while you can install Java on your system, Firefox will ignore it. Two reasons:

  • 64-bit Firefox for Windows never ran Java, just Flash and Silverlight
  • Firefox 52 (regular release) and later do not run any plugins other than Flash

Is there a particular site you need to use that requires Java? If so, you can use that site in Internet Explorer 11.

Thanks jscher2000, that answers my question. The message I received must have come on my IE browser. Again, thank you.
