In the past I was asked to COMPACT my folders 2 or 3 times a year. That hasn't happened for some time. I'm concerned as to who and how are my files being compacted if I'm not initiating the process. I do not have it set up as an automatic feature.

Check your settings. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

If in doubt, manually trigger compacting.

As I mentioned, I do not have the automatic feature set, therefore I would expect to be asked to compact. I cannot imagine that after more than a year, compaction wouldn't be required. Is there any other way it could be triggered or that some other process is in place of which I am not aware?

Please read the article. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders#Automatically

As said before, you can manually trigger compacting. a specific folder: right-click the folder in the folder pane - Compact

an entire account: select a folder within the account to be compacted File (Alt-F) - Compact Folders

There appears to be some misunderstanding happening. I am aware I can manually perform the compaction. The intent of my question was to determine if there was some other process that is doing the compaction about which I am not aware. I read the linked article. If I do not have the automatic feature active, does Thunderbird go ahead and perform the compaction even though I haven't asked for it to be done. If not, what other explanation can there be? I can't believe compaction is not taking place.

I'm not sure what 'other process' you have in mind. There is no compacting outside of Thunderbird.

I don't see why you'd expect Thunderbird to automatically compact folders, when you told it not to do this. Also, I don't see how you'd get a prompt to allow compacting folders in the first place with automatic compacting turned off.

For the last time, if you want to get your folders compacted with automatic compacting turned off, do it manually. Good luck.

AUTOMATIC COMPACT DOES NOT HAPPEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT ENABLED. EVER.
