Thunderbird freezes every few minutes at random time when browsing emails, after opening a pdf

more options

Hello,

My versions of email client, OS and antivirus: Thunderbird 60.8.0 Windows 10 home 1903 Antivirus AVG 19.6.3098 (build 19.6.4546.517), I have Web & email protection disabled

Thunderbird crashes (freezes - it goes to "not responding" state for Windows) every few minutes or seconds after actions when browsing emails at random time. The problem started a few weeks ago, I'm not sure if it is related with windows 1903 update but it could also have started before the update, I'm not really sure.

I have multiple accounts, one of them is yahoo the others are from corporate domains. I haven't notice any relation to specific account, time or action when the problem occurs. It might be more related to attachment management (opening, browsing attachment etc) but I'm not sure for that either.

I have tried restart Thunderbird without add-ons, restart PC several times etc. I noticed the exact same behavior.

I don't know if I could check logs myself in order to provide you more detailed info.

Thank you in advance! Alex

If the problem is triggered by opening pdf attachments, you could try and reset the action by opening Tools/Options/Attachments/Incoming, selecting the entry for pdf files, then clicking the Action drop-down, Delete Action. Restart TB and double-click a pdf attachment, and in the next window select the opening application, not by choosing from the list offered, but by Browsing to the actual Reader exe file. Or, select the option to save the pdf attachment outside of TB.

If you have had actual crashes, there should be crash reports in the form of URLs under Help/Troubleshooting Information, which you can post here. Try running Windows in safe mode and see if it affects TB performance.

If Windows safe mode doesn't point to some 3rd-party program as the source, consult this list of possible causes of poor performance. The first 5 or 6 items usually point to the cause.

Hello, Thanks for the instructions. I test those with no luck but I think I'm close to determine the "guilty" action that triggers the freeze. It seems to be the action of opening a pdf attachment (Acrobat reader is the opening program) . When opening a pdf attachment everything works fine but after a few "clicks" browsing the emails thunderbird will turn to a "not responding" state.

About your instructions I had the exact behavior under Windows safe mode. After browsing few e-mails (and opening a pdf attachment in between) Thunderbird froze (got to "not responding" state). You are right about your suspicion related to crash reports. There aren't any (recent, after I noticed the problem). I don't know if it is a "performance" issue because it does not seem to come out of this state no matter how much time I leave it (several minutes). Every time I have to close the window "end process" and restart. However I also disabled "Windows Search" service with no luck.

Thanks again, Alex

Browsing to the actual Reader exe file solved the problem Thanks! Alex
