What's up with Firefox 4? It's super slow loading things all of a sudden, has frequent hangs and crashes. How do I revert back to 3.5/3.6 or a version that actually works well?

Sometimes crashes on opening and won't open, other times crashes when trying to load google.com or yahoo.com, and recently it started taking a lot longer than it used to to open all webpages and it takes a lot longer to open the same pages than other browsers. Tried other browsers because I thought it might be a connection issue but they load all the pages quickly and problem free. Not sure what's going on with Firefox but I uninstall/re-installed it and am still having the same issues.

You may get some troubleshooting suggestions, but in case you need it, here's the process to roll back:

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older

Close Firefox 4.

You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.

Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.

Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

Yeah, the rollback worked great but Firefox 3.6 still has the same issues. It's really choppy now and hesitates when you click on a tab or link or anything and it hangs often and says "Firefox not responding" up above the address bar but then it'll load the page you are trying to get to after a few seconds. Oh well. Guess I'll stick with Google Chrome until Firefox fixes itself.

Sadly, software rarely fixes itself. As noted above, if you have time to devote to troubleshooting, you can get a lot of advice here. In particular, you may have a problem with an add-on or corruption in your profile. Some basic steps to try:

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, try starting Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode. Be careful not to "reset" anything permanently if you didn't back up.

Does that fix it? If not, try creating a new (blank) profile: Managing profiles. Any better?
