In earlier versions of FF a "status bar" could be toggled from the "view" menu. The option is no longer there in FF8

Firefox 4 + versions no longer have the Status bar.

The functionality of the Status bar has been replaced by the Add-ons bar that extensions can use.

You can use this extension to get the Status Bar back:
