I have version 9.0.1. Whenever I ask it to remember to open a pdf within firefox and remember that choice, it does not do so the next time. I've gone to options/applications and it does say the default is open with firefox. However, despite this it still asks me.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Cygnus_X-I,

You should look at the article Preferences not saved.

Hopefully this helps!

Oddly enough, I do not have a profile.js in that folder. My preferences are saved in the proper js file.

It looks like I chose a solution. I didn't intend to. Anyways, I tried everything and none of it works. I even reinstalled firefox after deleting all preferences and nothing has changed.

Automatic download actions are always linked to a specific MIME type as explained in the KB articles and if you've set such an action to another MIME type then it may not work the next time. We've seen a lot of issues over the years with setting an automatic download action and it is still not clear why it sometimes works and why not is some cases. You would probably need to check the HTTP log to see what is happening in each case.
