I want to remove the search suggestions from the drop down menu in the address bar. I don't have swagbucks - is there another solution?

I want to keep my history/bookmarks in the location bar, but delete the search suggestions that pop up. These suggestions have only just started appearing in the last week, and they are annoying and unhelpful! Previous solutions have said that this is related to swagbucks, but I don't have this installed (and don't even know what it is). How do I remove the search suggestions, but keep my history and bookmarks?

Make sure that you use the location bar and not the search bar.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Hello,

Can you please confirm that you are looking for the search suggestions to not appear in the location bar (where you type the website you want to visit).

If so, there are two settings you can use

  1. Disable search results from popping up from your bookmarks and history. For this you can do this. Click on the Firefox menu -> Preferences -> Privacy. In this dialog, at the bottom, you will see 'Location Bar' and where to display the search results when using the location bar. Please select this to 'Nothing'. Please see attached screenshot.
  2. To disable search from your search engine, you can follow the instructions mentioned in this support article KB Search the web from the Address Bar

I am using the location bar. I'm happy for search suggestions in the search bar, as that is exactly what I am doing - searching! It's in the location bar, where I want to go directly to a website, that the search suggestions are unwelcome.

Starting Firefox in safemode worked - must be an add on that configured itself when I updated the version.

Thanks gnittala and Cor-el for your help.

Some feedback for Firefox/Mozilla people: Not being an IT person / all that savvy with computers, it'd be handy if a) addons didn't 'add on' or change their settings without user permission and b) there was a simple switch on/switch off option for these types of things so that time isn't wasted trying to fix this stuff.

Cheers

I believe this problem may be due to the latest Adobe Flash update. Based upon casual observation, it looks like it takes over a portion of the location bar and provides its own recommendations for completing the websites I'm typing in. I've done a system restore to before the update and it appears for now that the problem has gone away.
