Since Firefox version 100 the last argument for firefox-bin (last argument for its option -appDir) is `true 1 socket` whereas in previous versions Firefox 95 and earlier this was `true tab` In Linux Fedora fc20.x86_64 the version 95 and earlier work but starting from the version 100 Firefox fails to display GUI (there appears only empty window created by Gnome and titled Firefox). All the requiremnts concerning software versions have been satisfied. Therefore I suspect that this difference in the last argument may indicate the cause of this problem. Hence my question: Is it possible, without recompilation of Firefox (now 132), to provide this last argument as `true tab` instead of `true 1 socket` for option -appDir of firefox-bin ?

At the end of output from command, ps -flu username
all the options and parameters provided by the binary firefox to firefox-bin
are displayed eg.,
for Firefox-132:
/usr/local/lib64/firefox132/firefox-bin -contentproc -parentBuildID 20241021175835
-prefsLen 24975 -prefMapSize 253763 -appDir /usr/local/lib64/firefox132/browser
{1ac1038c-19a2-4a74-8e03-83da21315c92} 15183 true 1 socket
while for firefox-95:
/usr/local/lib64/firefox95/firefox-bin -contentproc -childID 1 -isForBrowser
 -prefsLen 1 -prefMapSize 240375 -jsInitLen 278884 -parentBuildID 20211218203254
 -appDir /usr/local/lib64/firefox95/browser 7726 true tab

I have already signaled this problem in relevance to Firefox-128; without solution.

Firefox updated from 131 to 132 and deleted all bookmarks, history and emptied the bookmarkbackups folder. It displays a message that a Firefox file is open by another application and that some security software can cause this problem. According to Task Manager there are no other applications running, nor is security software running. (I turned off Windows Defender and rebooted.) The problem persists. If I can't recover the 80 or so complex bookmarks, I'll have to try MS Edge browser. I'm sure that months of history is not recoverable and is lost forever.

Was this software quality tested prior to distribution? If so, it wasn't very thorough.

Why does Firefox delete files and folders during an update? It would be better to make a backup copies prior to unleashing a destructive update on unsuspecting users.

Before you ask, no I don't create full backups because a) my laptop is used 12 x 7 weekly, b) a 4TB SSD full backup takes days, not hours depending on the destination and c) a 4TB SSD differential backup takes more than a day. I've tried both and they are not practical.

Tried to sync my extensions to a new computer, but some of them don't appear. It seems they have been officially taken down by Firefox. I tried to manually transfer the xpi file from one profile to the other but it says "this addon could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt". The new computer I'm trying to transfer the extensions is running Ubuntu and the old one Windows 10 (not sure if it was relevant, but anyways).

Thanks for your help.

wtf is going on with you guys. I have automatic updates turned on, and yet FF is demanding to check (literally 5 minutes after the update) to see if a new update is needed. If you guys can't control your updaters, then perhaps I will switch to google chrome.

you have to realize that this issue is causing you to lose 100% of your loyal fans in lieu of a different browser. I'm halfway out the door already. Either fix the issues, or I'm gone.

I got an error with firefox. Saw it was not latest. Couldn't uninstall. Installed correct version over old one. Didn't have latest bookmarks. I see Imported bookmarks at top and imported(2) which are probably from when I got my new laptop although I have added many since.. How do I at least get the imported ones into my bookmarks and can I then delete those two files? and how do I get my latest bookmarks back? I went to manage bookmarks and mistakenly selected 10/31 and now I don't see the old ones. Windows 11

I've always chosen the Settings option to notify me about updates but let me choose to install them. Those notifications still give me the option to "dismiss," but these days ignore that and proceed to install the updates anyway. Worse, I can't even choose to restart at my convenience: The browser basically stops working until I do that, displaying the message I've attached here. (There used to be a Settings option to "Use a background service to install updates" that could be unchecked, but it's not there any more.)

This is not only obnoxious but a practical inconvenience because every time it happens I have to repopulate my Private Browsing sites. I'd hoped that there would be a fix in the latest update (that just forced itself on me) - 132.0 - but no.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I am posting this to pass on knowledge that I wish I discovered earlier, probably because of my failure to pay attention when I acquired this PC, a Windows 10 64-bit. Periodically I tried and failed to update both Firefox and Thunderbird through its About drop down menu option. I would shut down, restart, hoping over time it would update by itself. This time around when that didn't work, I realized that for Thunderbird an updated version was available through the Microsoft Store, I chose that. All one has to do is click on Free Get. Then, the program applies the update. That routine works with Firefox too on Windows 10. So, when these updates become available, find them on the Microsoft Store, chose them and the respective programs with update.

Hello, I have a problem with the "message filter". Namely, when I updated version 128.4.0esr (64-bit), the filters stopped working. Hi,

I'm on the latest version of Firefox for Windows. All my add-ons are outdated but when I click on "Check for Updates" it says there are none available. Setting add-on updates to "default" or "enabled" doesn’t make a difference.

My firewall isn’t blocking any connections (I even tried with it disabled), and Firefox has no other issues.

Any Ideas ?

I have Thunderbird v. 102.15.1 installed. I do not want to update to v. 115.16.2. I have set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Thunderbird\DisableAppUpdate = 1. This worked for several months. However yesterday when I turned my computer on, I found that Thunderbird had updated to v. 115.16.2. After a great deal of fruitless attempts to downdate it again, I finally restored all of my C: drive from a backup I'd fortunately made just the day before. That worked and brought back v. 102.

However when I turned my computer on this morning, I found that once again Thunderbird had updated to v. 115. When I go to Menu > Help > About Thunderbird, it shows a window saying "Updates disabled by your system administrator". Yet "disabled" or not, Thunderbird updates itself! (I don't know what "system administrator" means - it's my computer and I'm the "administrator".)

How can I keep Thunderbird from updating without my permission?

I installed this add-on to my wife's HP laptop computer and it appeared to install properly.

However, it appears the add-on is not synced or some other problem because it failed to display the "Norton Password Manager" icon in the Menu Bar of the Firefox Browser.

The installation did create Vault and a Vault Password was provided. New entries can by added to the vault when logging in to new websites, however, without the Menu Bar Icon displayed in the browser, there is not way to view and use the vault entries.

I tried to uninstall the add-on and re-install it, but to no avail. It still does not display the Norton Password Manager icon in the menu bar.

Is there someway to correct this ? Any help would be appreciated.

I installed this add-on to my Dell Desktop XPS computer and it works just fine.

See photo of my Menu Bar (attached).

Firefox update today took a very long time. Now it doesn't load correctly (stories are blank without pix, can't access any websites). I've shut down my laptop (Windows 10) multiple times but that didn't help. I have Norton which worked just fine until today's update. Is there a way to delete the updates? If I uninstall Firefox will it keep my bookmarks? Does Firefox send an email to the email on my account for verification? I had tried to update the email on my account after this update issue came up; however, I couldn't access my account because if this update. I no longer have access to the email address on my account. How will I know if anyone responds to this? Anyway to get phone support? Thanks!
