Problem with spell check.
Hi. Having a real problem with the spell checker. I'm using a recently purchased MacBook Pro I have downloaded the British English dictionary and word pack. Have also checked via Mac System Preferences that spell check is enabled. The spelling icon is hilighted and ticked when composing an email, the spelling however is never checked even when prompted. One further anomally is found under "options" i.e. "Spell check as you type" while ticked is constantly in light grey so therefor not active. Please advise.

Maybe the system Keyboard preferences have auto check enabled and this is over riding the thunderbird option.
Suggest you disable the system auto check. The spell-checking service in OS X can be adjusted system-wide. Go to the Keyboard system preferences, and then click the 'Text' tab. In here, you will see the settings for text substitutions, next to which you will see a checkbox for 'Correct spelling automatically.' Unchecking this will disable auto-correct system-wide.
Then see if this coorects the Thunderbird option making it not grey.
