With multiple tabs open, when I click to go back to an open tab, FF sometimes closes the tab

I have multiple tabs open and sometimes, not always, when I want to go back to a previous tab, the tab closes. I do not click on the "X" but somewhere in the middle of the tab.

Try clicking away from the X. Is the problem still there?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

I don't know whether you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, but if you click on a tab using the scroll wheel (middle-click) that also will close the tab.

Or it could be something else, but as a workaround until we figure out what's going on, hopefully you can recover your place using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+t
  • right-click a different tab > Undo Close Tab
