Since the update to Thunderbird 45.0, e-mails are extremely slow in loading. No changes to e-mail server settings. Is this a problem with the new version, or what?

Chosen solution

Since I upgraded, to Windows 10, the loading of e-mail has improved. Normally I check e-mail when I first get on computer. I now know this is when my Internet Security program is getting it's daily update. Otherwise, the speed has much improved compared to pre-upgrade.

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Does problem go away?

Although the solution works, it does not address the problem. It is ridiculous to open Windows that way just to load e-mails at a "normal" rate.

Yes, I am running Windows 7, but, am going to upgrade to Win 10 today.

I will see if there is any difference to the current situation.

Nobody said you should run safe mode 24x7. It's a test. And it indicates that something in your Windows environment is causing problems - i.e. the problem is not Thunderbird.

One typical cause is AV software. Sometimes downloading Thunderbird from http://getthunderbird.com/ and installing helps break the logjam

You should know, that many users who have updated to win10 start having trouble. So you run a strong risk of trading one problem for another perhaps more serious problem. You have been warned :)

I have Thunderbird 46.0 now, and Windows 10. Since the Thunderbird upgrade my mail loaded slower and slower, and now will ONLY load when I have Thunderbird (not Windows) in Safe Mode, and then ONLY when I first enter the program. It will not check for new mail (as it previously did) and it will not download if I click "get messages". The Error Console lists a lot of "could not read chrome manifest" issues (only informational) and other assorted information. But the "X" issue is: moble.charter.net: server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555. I've researched this error code but have found no resolution. Some solutions suggest excluding Thunderbird from Microsoft Defender search parameters but I can't even figure out how to do THAT in Windows 10 (because I cannot find the name of the folder where my emails are stored and don't know the extension and it requires one or the other to exclude them). If I download another copy of Thunderbird, as suggested above, will I lose all my emails, contacts and so forth or will it just suck them in like nothing happened?

No

Thank you! Once I'm sure I've gone through this phase where everything I touch breaks (LOL!!) I'll do that. Hope it works.

Well, I uninstalled and downloaded a fresh copy of Thunderbird (as suggested above) and cold-booted my desktop and, though I didn't lose any data (as promised above--thank you), it also didn't resolve the problem. So back to the drawing board.

I tried talking to Charter.net, but they refused to talk to me because I'm not running Outlook and "they don't support Thunderbird."

Any chance this is something that needs to be addressed in the next update?

You may want to read this saga: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1120329 I don't fully understand the issues myself but there's obviously some kind of problem with Thunderbird and Charter -- you'll see that seven people flag that thread as 'I have this problem too'.

I have precisely the same problem on a Mac - since updating to 45.0 I cannot load messages (or it takes close to forever to do so). when I move into safe mode in Thunderbird, it works just fine. So now I have disabled all add-ons and themes (except the default) and toolbars, But TB still will not run properly in regular mode. Unless there is some kind of fix available, I will have to (very unhappily - I have been using Thunderbird for over a decade with no issues) torch the program. grateful for any suggestions

Not sure if its the same issue, but....

I have several Gmail accounts and they all forward to my Charter email account so I can read all my emails in one place. I added all of my Gmail accounts to TB (v45) and all of my Gmail accounts sync just fine in real time, but my Charter email only syncs when I close TB and restart it.

I want to be able to leave TB running all the time and monitor my Charter account in real time. Clicking "Get Messages" does not seem to work.

Thanks, Scott S

Charter has it's own problems, not caused by Thunderbird. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1120329

I have this problem too. Painfully slow mail downloads But have no problem on the same PC when using a different mail client. (Legacy AOL 9.7 desktop) so it's prob. not my isp mail server.

PS. I Hope not to upgrade to Win 10 for ethical reasons!!!
