Messages not appearing in inbox, despite unread indicator showing them

The message indicator beeps, inbox gets bolded and the unread indicator increments, and the tray icon gets the red circle with unread indicator - but no message appears in the inbox. Not in junk or any other folder either, it's just not there.

When I log in to the same account via iPhone, the message IS there, so it's just not appearing in the inbox pane.

FYI, the problem is intermittent. Many messages are showing, but some are not.
