When Firefox crashes, the restore brings back the tabs, but they are identified as New Tab even though they are blank and I can't retrieve the URL.

Firefox will crash. I restore the session. I used to get my tabs back. Now they come back, but almost as ghosts. They have the symbol of the page to the left of "New Tab" but there is no tab actually there and no URL. I'm tired of having to go through my history every 2 days just to get back what I was working on.

Why don't we try to help figure out what is causing Firefox to crash?

Please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Most of my crashes don't have bp- but these are the most recent 3 that have them. I have crashes every so often but never used to lose my tabs.

That could be a problem with hardware acceleration (graphics display driver).

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

I closed and restarted Firefox and my tabs came back. Don't know if that is a permanent solution, but it is an improvement. Thanks.
