I have repeatedly set my preference to open any pdf with Adobe Pro and that works fine. Except that the next time Firefox updates, it is reset to "save file". So once again, I change the preference and all is well until the next update. Because updates don't happen every day, it's not convenient to disable add-ons pending the next update....

Once in a while, an update changes user settings. But you say this happens all the time.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I don't have any extensions like that. And it's only the pdf suffix that is affected. But thanks for the thought.
