Firefox crashes

more options

On my Windows XP (SP3) desktop machine. I run Firefox current version 50.1.0 and it keeps crashing in startup, I can run it in safe mode. I have ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, however this "crashing" on startup was not an issue until I updated Firefox to 50.1.0

I have Firefox 50.1.0 also on my Windows 8.1 machine, with the same ZoneAlarm software, and have no issues.

Chosen solution

Ok, just fond the issue. so far so good. I reset ZoneAlarm to Default settings, and everything is working. Apparently Firefox just doesnt do well with a higher firewall setting, even thought It is in the exempted list. So I had to tone the firewall down a notch.. I prefer not to, I'll see what happens on the next Firefox version update.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. On the keyboard, press [Windows] The image "Windows key" does not exist. + [R]. This should bring up a Run window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, type %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Are you running Hitman Pro?

Upon receiving your reply, I have checked, I do have some remnants of Hitman Pro on my system, I am working on clearing those out, and see if it resolves the issue.

I have removed any remnants of Hitman Pro, however I am still having the same issue, Second ID generated: bp-89a7f5f9-5bd3-47bd-939d-054ea2161221

I have ZoneAlarm set to were Firefox is given full permissions, however when I shutdown ZoneAlarm, Firefox will startup and function without issue. Soon as I re-enable ZoneAlarm, Firefox closes and throws a crash reporter.

The Crash ID has the same signature as the one you originally reported.

It seems you have already identified the cause as ZoneAlarm, so I suggest you remove or disable that and contact ZoneAlarms's support for advice. Hopefully there software is supposed to work in Firefox and will be patched in due course.

What actually is the zone alarm software you use  ? Full name and version of the software ?

I will contact ZoneAlarm support, as I run the same version of ZoneAlarm and Firefox on both Windows XP and 8.1, only the XP machine has the issue.

Thanks for the reply. That is an interesting observation. I wonder if the problem is XP specific, If so it may not be something that gets resolved given the age of XP.

I do note Zone Alarm does seem to support XP (see https://www.zonealarm.com/software/extreme-security/ )

Firefox is winding down support for XP and Vista, but is still supporting both, and is I believe the only mainstream browser that does. (See also news item http://www.ghacks.net/2016/09/27/firefox-53-no-support-for-windows-xp-or-vista/ - our Mozilla help articles will get updated nearer the time)

I have contacted ZoneAlarm, and correction on the version, it is: 14.3.119.000 apparently ZA doesnt offer a newer version for XP. for now I will have to run Firefox in safemode as I refuse to disable my security to run any browser. Hopefully either ZA or Firefox puts an update out to correct this issue.
