I have set gmail.com to forward all messages to my slingshot.co.nz account. Now I am instructed by thunderbird to open gmail.com via my web browser. The new password for gmail is not accepted by thunderbird but is accepted by gmail via the web browser. How can it be accepted by thunderbird

Usually when you get that message Google have blocked access to the account from non web browsers because they have some sort of message for you to read.

I must ask what you think Thunderbird is going to get if all the mail is forwarded to another account. Does gmail even keep a copy?

Are you using two factor authentication? have you created an app password?
