Firefox unexpectedly closed and I couldn't get it to reopen. All my files are gone!

When I opened Firefox this evening I was reading my emails when it unexpectedly closed. I tried to reopen and an entirely new screen appeared. I tried to get into email and it was impossible to find. All my bookmarks have disappeared! This is outrageous! I have critical addresses that I have to contact in my business which are part of the bookmark list. What has happened to my old lists and to my email account?
