Prompted to compact mailboxes to save 2 GB. Then incredibly slow for days, and lots of "Not Responding". (gmail)(win10)
When I try reading an e-mail two strange things happen:
1. I read something like, downloading message 3 of 40,000. 2. When attempting to delete a message I'm informed briefly that I'm no longer connected, nothing happens, and then the message is deleted and I'm reconnected.
I tried uninstalling the application and then reinstalling it but the above behavior continued. The application is now so slow that I'm thinking of discontinuing using it.
What can I do to get back to "normal" performance?

Gmail account? And what do you see in tools > activity manager?
When I look in the Task Manager, under Processes, I see Thunderbird (32 bit). It is using 367 MB of memory and either 0.2% CPU or 0% CPU depending upon whether it is responding or "Not responding." It is cycling between "Not responding" and the other state approximately every 2 seconds. The major CPU user is "Antimalware Service Executable" with roughly 415 MB utilization and the major use of Memory is MS Edge with 796 MB usage. My computer, a Dell Inspiron, has 16 GB memory.
Yes, I have a Gmail account.
There have been other gmail users reporting issues.
There are also other possible issues on windows, including antivirus. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems
