I am using Thunderbird 60.9.0 on Windows 10 pro. My existing gmail account is working fine. But I am having problems adding a new (exisitng) gmail acoount. It is telling me the the username or password is invalid (see file). When I click on [DONE], I get a google popup window asking me to sign in to my account(which I do using the same user name and password) and to allow Thunderbird access - I click [allow]. The popup goes away but I am left with the existing Thunderbird error message (see file) and cannot progress. If I log into my google mail in the browser, all works perfectly. Grateful for any thoughts. Duncan

Chosen solution

This is fixed in TB 68.2.1 for gmail IMAP accounts, but for earlier versions, apply the workaround mentioned here:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1592407#c22

Tools/Options(Mac:Preferences; Linux:Edit/Preferences)/Advanced/General/Config. editor, double-click general.useragent.compatMode.firefox to true.

This should also fix google calendar and contact sync. in 68.2.1 until updated Provider and gcontactsync add-ons are released.

I have the same issue this morning. It seems to be a problem with Google. For some reason it's not adding Thunderbird in the allowed 3rd party apps (you can see that from your google account under the security tab).

Existing accounts still function but it won't allow new ones to be connected.

Emails directly on www.gmail.com works fine.

Turning on the "Less secure apps" option does not change anything.

Exactly so Alex. At least, I am glad I am not alone.

What can be done?

I'm having the same trouble - can't get Thunderbird to recogize a @gmail.com account. I'm on TB 68.4.2 !

I went over to BT wi-fi and security just before trying to add the new account - is this anything to do with it?

Same problem here too, version 68.4.2. I had my gmail working, then this week it quit, removed it and tried to start over and won't work. I can log in no problem outside of thunderbird so it's not my login.

Is the account POP or IMAP, and is the authentication OAuth2 or normal password? Starting with TB 68.5, OAuth2 is also supported for gmail POP accounts.

I followed Googles instructions for setting it up and didn't work at all. I really love it when everything is working great then some genius decides to just change crap!
