Hi all, My first time. Yesterday TB suddenly would not send messages. Called service provider who verified all settings correct and webmail working ok. Changed outgoing sever settings then changed them back again and it worked. Now not working again and changing settings this time not helping. Disabled Kaspersky AV..no help. This is what it says. "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.internode.on.net timed out. Try again." OS is win 10 home. TB is 68.7.0 Incoming mail is OK. I have no add ons for TB. After numerous attempts changing outgoing server details and redoing them suddenly worked again. Appears to be very unstable. Have rebooted PC and run troubleshooting to no help.

If you're using secure settings, they should be mail.internode.on.net on port 465, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal passwords, User Name = part of address before the @.

https://www.internode.on.net/support/guides/email/secure_email/

The best way to test if Kaspersky AV is interfering by either scanning mail folders or secure connections is to run Windows in safe mode. Scanning of the TB profile folder and secure (SSL) connections should be disabled - the standard recommendation for all security apps.

Thank you for you assistance. All of the settings are as you say they should be. Verified by service provider.

I have never had a problem with Kas and TB in the past and did disable it to test. Checked task manager to see if Kas was running and it wasn't. I did get it going late night but now the problem has reappeared again. Any ideas why so intermittent?

If the problem is caused by KAV, it could be because an update to either TB or KAV has made the two incompatible, although previously they were compatible. Again, turning it 'off' is no guarantee it's still having an effect - Windows safe mode or removal ensures it doesn't launch at startup.

Intermittency could be due to problems at the server end. If you have an account with a 'stable' provider such as gmail, and sending is error-free, it suggests problems with internode.

I am no expert but are you saying that email folders should NOT be scanned ? If so what if there was something malicious in there ?

If SSL connections are not scanned doesn't that put everything at risk ? I may not have that right but i thought that SSL connections were the email connection to the mail server and if correct what would happen if some virus etc came with the mail?

Apart from that i have no idea which ones to disable via Kas manage applications as there is nothing obvious. Any help is much appreciated.

I did ask that very question and they say no as the webmail test they did worked fine. Internode is a decent provider part of the TPG group/iiNet/Westnet etc. On of the big three.

Mail folders should not be scanned - the real-time background scanner is sufficient.

TB is quite capable of negotiating secure connections to the server without AV apps interfering with their 'protection'. Consult the KAV website for instructions on how to manage folder exclusions and scanning options.

Sending via webmail uses a different set of servers and is not the same as sending over smtp via an email client.

This is strange days. Suddenly started working again!!. Didn't work on boot up. One thought. I do not have my password saved in TB and now can't find an option to save without creating new account or using password manager. I am happy to put it in manually once per session for security reasons but i do have to put it in for get messages and send message once per session. Don't know why each send/receive have to be done seperately.

OK my thought at the time and they say that because i use Pop3 that it is the same procedure and does or can go through up to 3 different locations.I think i remember that right. I am only guessing that the test just eliminates my PC and TB.

If you don't see the box to check to remember the password, open Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor and double-click the preference signon.rememberSignons to true.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_not_remembered_-_Thunderbird#No_checkbox_to_remember_passwords

If that doesn't work, delete the 3 files as explained at the end of that section.

user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false); Change the value from false to true. Mine says this...... user_pref("signon.importedFromSqlite", true); I have no idea what is happening. I have in the last two days ticked that box but still had to put the password in each session for send and get messages. NOW without changing JS file it is suddenly working without having to enter the P/W for send and get. Just sent myself 3 test messages. Had to select "get messages" for them to come thru although at other times TB has notified me that new messages have arrived. Any ideas why this is all happening ? BTW i did get your last advice by email but cannot see it on the forum. Might be me as a bit confused with this forum. Did refresh page.
