When I send an email to one person who is @lineone.net I get an undeliverable message '... not yet delivered... Socket error: connection error'. After a further period I get a message saying that the message hasn't been delivered as the number of retries has reached it's limit. If i logon to virginmedia and send the email from there, it is delivered OK. This is the only address that I have a problem with using Thunderbird. Any suggestions for reason & solution?

There's a high chance that your Internet Service Provider's range of IP addresses has been blacklisted by the recipients' mail server. That would explain why sending via webmail succeeds while sending via Thunderbird doesn't. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1124099
