When I start Thunderbird now it no longer reopens the messages that were open last time, nor does it automatically display the mailbox I had displayed the last time Thunderbird was running. I have no idea what could have changed this. Can anyone tell me how to get Thunderbird to do these 2 things again on startup? Thank you.

Chosen solution

Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Directory, close TB. Delete or rename session.json, the file that stores the set of tabs and folder that were open at last closing. Restart TB and test to see if it works properly.
