On the latest revision there is a new column to the left of the subject column that sometimes holds a gold *. Why no heading or somewhere we are told the significance. Thank you.

Nothing new about that star or asterisk, it has been around since version three, but apparently you have just noticed it.

It is mail that has not been shown to you before. Folders will have it to indicate there is unread mail you have not seen as yet and it will go away after you view the folder, even if you do not open the emails as you are now "aware" that they are there to be read and have "seen" them.
