Inbox problem...old emails marked as unread when they have already been read

Apparently, Thunderbird 102.4.0 has been re-reading thousands of emails from my server using the POP protocol and adding them to my inbox. It appears that many emails which have already been read (starting at around July 19, 2022) are actually being duplicated in my Inbox, along with the original email (which was marked as read). As an example, see the highlighting in the attached image of my inbox:
