I recently changed hosting company for my email address. When I put the new server settings (IMAP) into Thunderbird, it happily showed me the new emails, but all my messages from the previous server suddenly disappeared. Are they really gone, or are they stored somewhere?

Did you make the change by overtyping the new server info over the old server info? If so, the new account would have deleted any messages in its first sync, as those messages are not on the new host's server.

I'm afraid that's exactly what I did. So does that mean they're gone for good? I thought maybe they might be archived somewhere on my system.

My guess is they're gone.
