Permanent deletion from Thunderbird to (gmail) Server does not work

Dear, I'm trying to clean up my massive mailbox by deleting email messages from the "All mail" view in Thunderbird. Despite settings like "Immediately delete" and "clean up (expunge) inbox on exit" and "empty trash on exit", the emails always come back to my thunderbird client.

When deleting directly on gmail (eg. in accessed through chrome) the mails remain deleted - also in thunderbird.

What can I do to avoid the need to redo the action over and over again, and eventually having to abandon thunderbird in favor of working with gmail online?

Best regards, Pascal

My suggestion is to unsubscribe from allmail and the remove the allmail files from within profile. Allmail is a duplicate of all other messages and this forces thunderbird to do double maintenance and downloads take twice as long and disc space twice as much.
