I am trying to set Google.com as my home page. When I do this and then close Firfox and retrun to it later the home page keeps resetting to:

http://www.searchqu.com/402

which does not make any sense

Sound just like you probably got some malware infecting your PC. I would recommend doing a full virus scan asap. Microsofts antivirus/-malware/-spyware solution "Microsoft Security Essentials" is one of the best apps in my opinion... plus its free of charge.
