Text comes up as numbers on certain websites

Some text comes up as numbers or "equations" on websites. I copied these numbers and pasted it into writing program which translated it into the text it should be. For example, 3/6 /59826 comes up as "english" when posted into text edit.

Currently running a macbook pro 2.16 ghz intel core duo with 2gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram

and firefox version 3.6.8
