Is there a limit to the number of bookmarks permitted?

I have attempted to bookmark several pages and, admittedly did not look real closely when I did it, but the bookmark was not on the list when I went to retrieve it.

I'm on Windows XP, Dell laptop, using Firefox 4.0.1

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
