I just downloaded the recent version of Firefox, but I can't figure out how to get it to go directly to my g-mail account when I click on the firefox icon.

which is essentially the same as if you just change your home page

You might want to consider using a simpler home page, ideally one that is on your local drive, so you know Firefox is working even if you don't have a connection.
