I use Firefox Portable - recent - and XP - When I click on an MHT file in My Computer it is associated with Firefox but it won't load the file. It says please close the Firefox that is already running so it can start a new one. Why won't it load the file into the Firefox that is already open? It used to before I updated.

Probably an issue with Firefox Portable and default browser status.The Portable version does not having registry keys to do that.

Try using File > Open File within Firefox for opening MHT files.

Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).

What is a no remote switch - and how can I tell if it is set or not. And what really is an environmental variable.

Did you look in Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables ?

What is the command line (Target) if you open the Properties of that Firefox desktop via the right-click context menu?

more options

Target = F:\0 PROGRAMFILESKR\  !&&&Portable Programs\Firefox Portable\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe"

No I never looked in Environmental Variables until you suggested it. But when I do I see nothing like the items you were talking about

MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).

   http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_a_new_instance_of_Firefox_with_another_profile

And I don't understand them - and see no place to set to 1 or 0

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser the like IE the default browser and then let Firefox make itself the default browser again.

Thanks. Will try it. Note that if Firefox is NOT running and I click on an mht file it loads just fine.

That would still indicate that Firefox got started with a -no-remote command line switch.

Did you open the properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and checked the target line?

What I get is F:\0 PROGRAMFILESKR\  !&&&Portable Programs\Firefox Portable\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe"

I don't see any switches here.
