That is normal in Firefox: when you download an executable file, you get the Save/Cancel dialog, not the Open/Save/Cancel dialog.

To find a download, try pressing Ctrl+j, then right-click and choose "Open Containing Folder."

To have Firefox ask you where the save downloads, you can change the setting here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > General

Do you have Service Pack 2 (or SP3) installed on Windows XP? I assume you do, but if you do not, you definitely should get it for the major security updates.

I also mention it because Firefox 12 is the latest version that runs without Service Pack 2.

The plugin updates are not centralized, you have to go to the publisher's sites. However, Mozilla has a tool to help you find the most common ones more efficiently: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Any luck?

My computer refuses to install the newest version of ff. I even tried exe from where the file was saved...wouldn't exe. My computer will not install XP 'service pack' 2 or 3, I have spent many hours trying. Very complex instructions, many times, nothing works. Everytime I try to open ff, it tells me to install latest version. I give up...
