the builtin .pdf viewer stopped working. instead i just got the offer to download the .pdf. after removing ~/.mozilla it works again. if there's anything in the removed ~/.mozilla that would help debugging, i'll be glad to extract..

Did you select "Preview in Firefox" in Edit > Preferences > Applications?

You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to false on the about:config page to enable the build-in PDF viewer.
You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref and add application/pdf to prevent using a plugin like the Adobe Reader.

The latest version of the PDF viewer is available as an extension and does a better job than the version shipped with the current Firefox release in a lot of cases.
