Hello, Since yesterday I have some problems with searching on firefox. Every time I type in the search bar, firefox indicates that it is not a secure connection. I'll get the error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER. The search bar shows google.com as the address. If I than change that to google.nl, (nl stands for Netherlands: my country) he goes to the search page of google.

Example: if I type in the search bar 'mozilla' he normaly goes to https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-ab&q=mozilla+. But no he gives met that error code. When I change the .com in .nl he will just go to the search page from google. https://www.google.nl/search?client=firefox-b-ab&q=mozilla+.

It seems to give me that code only on google and youtube. Because when I go directly to the site of wikipedia I have no trouble but when I type 'wikipeida' in to the search bar he wil give me that error code again.

I have tried many things. Uninstalled the browser, refreshing firefox but nothing seems to works. You are literally my last hope.

What security software do you have?


You can check if there is more detail available about the issuer of the certificate.

  • click the "Advanced" button show more detail
  • click the blue error text (SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER) to show the certificate chain
  • click "Copy text to clipboard" and paste the base64 certificate chain text in a reply

If clicking the blue error text doesn't provide the certificate chain then try these steps to inspect the certificate.

  • open the Servers tab in the Certificate Manager
    • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
      Certificates: View Certificates -> Servers: "Add Exception"
  • paste the URL of the website (https://xxx.xxx) in it's Location field

Let Firefox retrieve the certificate -> "Get Certificate"

  • click the "View" button and inspect the certificate

You can see detail like the issuer of the certificate and intermediate certificates in the Details tab.

P.S. When I use an other search engine (other than google) like duckduckgo or ecosia than I do not have that problem. So it appears to be only a problem when I have google as my standard search engine.
