There must be a post on the site, but I tried via Google to see if I could figure this out and no luck. If there is a post, please direct me to that information.

I have many email addresses that I use on Thunderbird and I love the program. I have rules setup for each account. The rules files are huge and my question is, is there a way to merge all of my rules files together? I find that each account I end up setting up the same rule as another account. If there is a way to merge them together and in a perfect world, remove the duplicates (I do not know what it would do if it had duplicates in it) and that way I could copy that for every mailbox.

Thank you for your help.

If you have created a load of rules for one account and you want same rules in another account do this:

  • Menu icon > Help > More TRoubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' - half way - Profile Folders - click on 'Open Folder'

A new window opens showing contents of profile name folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.

All POP accounts are in the 'Mail' folder All Imap accounts are in the 'ImapMail' folder.

  • Click on 'Mail' or 'ImapMail' as appropriate.

You will see list of account names. One of which you have created a load of rules.

  • click on that account name folder to see contents.

The Message Filter rules are in this file : msgFilterRules.dat To check you have the correct file:

  • open the msgFilterRules.dat file using a simple text editor like Notepad.

If it the not correct file, you need to check another mail account folder. If it is the correct file

  • Copy the 'msgFilterRules.dat' file
  • Access another mail account folder
  • Delete the 'msgFilterRules.dat' file in that account
  • paste the copied msgFilterRules.dat into the account name folder - thus replacing the deleted one.
  • Repeat for other mail account folders.

When finfished start Thunderbird.

Todd,

That was VERY helpful. I saw how the file structure was and just merged some of my big accounts together and then moved the file to the folder. I want to say thank you for the detailed steps!
