I am completely invested in Microsoft Outlook and cannnot seem to get a shortcut in Firefox 3.6.10 to get it to run. I have to go to my start menu each time I want to start Outlook.

Try the Get Mail extension. You will need to set up the Get Mail options to point to Outlook, the Get Mail site gives details of how to do that.
