I had Firefox open on my desktop with multiple tabs open (it was the newest version of Firefox - 9.0.1) when Windows performed an automatic update late last week. When I came back to my computer, Firefox would not restart properly. It will launch, it shows the open tabs and I get the error screen showing it was unable to relaunch the session. However, when I click on the button to launch a new session, the browser indicates connecting, then hangs. It never goes beyond that. I tried all of the steps for starting in safe mode, which it will NOT do. I uninstalled Firefox (using control panel), downloaded the newest version, and reinstalled, and it still hangs. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone please give me some guidance on what I might be able to do to get Firefox working again? (Short of throwing out Windows?)

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

If you have submitted Breakpad crash reports then post the IDs of one or more Breakpad crash reports (bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page. You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

Thanks so much! It worked. I was able to copy one piece at a time to the new profile until I found the corrupt file. All is working now.

I've had this problem a few times in the past. It was usually solved by updating or reinstalling Firefox. Now that I've tried this method, which included me backing-up and restoring all of my profile data using both the Profile Manager and MozBackup, the problem seems to have gone away. I simply backed-up and restored everything using MozBackup -- including what it labels "unknown files". I'm not sure if using this method skips over any corrupt files or not, but it works for me. This was easier than manually moving my profile using Windows Explorer.

This is ridiculous. After the automatic upgrade to 9.0.1, Firefox has crashed on several occasions. This needs fixing!!! I have not had this much trouble with FF since before I was using it. Having to reform/revise/restart my profile for the solution is not a solution at all. Fix it or go back to v8.

I'm with Richard. 9.0.1 is nothing but trouble. After consecutive page hangs while loading (which means I cannot get to, much less click the Firefox button to remedy anything - why don't you have something in the help files that talks about not even being able to connect via firefox) I have tried uninstalling and re-installing twice now with the same problem - page hang while it tries to load the initial page. I have cleaned my cache, I have deleted prefs.js and sessionstore.js and .bak files and still nothing.

Posts like the following are useless w/out being able to load any initial Firefox browser webpage:

"There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems."

All the Mozillaline articles also do not address remedies using a non-Firefox browser.

Ideas?

Or better yet, how do I go back to version 8?????????????????????????

I agree with the above posters. I've now had this problem affect me again and it hasn't even been a week. I don't like having to recreate a profile all the time.

For me, the crash that starts this series of events happens when I'm watching a Flash video on a site like Netflix or Hulu.

I thought my problem was solved with the new profile, but it's still not right. I can't get Firefox to save any of my passwords. It's a pain because I have to enter passwords every time I log into every single website. It gives me the pop-up asking if I want to save password, but when I click on it, nothing happens. It doesn't save anything. I've about given up and gone to Chrome, which I really hate. I want a new release of FF that fixes all of these stupid bugs. Does anyone have any input on how to fix the password issue?

I also had this very same problem happen to me again. For some inexplicable reason, Firefox crashes. Then, when I open it again, the session restore window comes up. No matter what I do from that point on, Firefox will hang. I have to create a new profile from scratch.

It seems that every time Firefox crashes, my user profile becomes corrupted and needs to be recreated. I loathe that session restore screen, as it means I have to, once again, recreate my user profile.

Luckily, that Mozbackup utility lets me salvage the corrupted profile data. Still, this is an unacceptable nuisance.
