FF17.0.1 (also ff16) Click to follow link (eg a link in an email) opens in the currently selected FF window (which is a real pain) I am sure it used to open in a new tab Ctrl-click to follow a link from MS word opens in existing tab

Tools->Options->tabs->Open new window in new tab is ticked

I think I had this problem before and made it go away by unticking this option, closing FF and then opening FF again However, if I try that, when I restart FF the option is still ticked!!! (A clue maybe?)

The problem occurs if FF started in safe mode It is not possible to ctrl-click the link in outlook (I guess OUtlook must disable that) I don't have a mouse with a middle button

Right click open in new tab works fine Right click open in new window is fine

For links opened via an external program you can use this pref to override the browser.link.open_newwindow pref if this pref doesn't have the default value -1.

  • browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external

hello Rincewindwiz, please try this: enter about:config into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named browser.link.open_newwindow - right-click and reset this entry to the default value (3) and restart firefox afterwards.

when preferences don't stick after a restart of firefox it might be different issue, check this article for some common troubleshooting steps: How to fix preferences that won't save

good plan but . . . . It had been set to 1 Right click->reset changed it to 3 I restarted firefox (home page) I clicked a link in outlook and it promptly opened in my FF home page

I'll look at the preferences link.

Thanks

Whooops not so fast. It seems something is changing it back again. Is there anyway of finding out what is changing it short of doing a reset and then adding the addins one at a time?

If you do not keep changes after a restart then see:

If it does work properly in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I was afraid that was the case. Thanks for your help
