I have firefox as my default browser (formerly it was internet explorer), and I use earthlink total access as my sign-in home page and email. I added my wife's profile to this computer, and during this procedure the bookmarks for her account are imported also. But when we sign in with her access, the home page displays correctly for her earthlink profile but the firefox bookmarks keep coming up with my bookmarks and toolbar instead of hers. I do not understand why firefox is not acknowledging this new profile with the correct bookmarks.

Whoops, I skipped something. To copy your wife's bookmarks from the PC to the laptop, you can use the Export feature.

(1) Export bookmarks from Firefox on the PC: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks

(2) Copy that file to the laptop (e.g., by USB flash drive, through email, or however is convenient)

(3) Import the HTML file into Firefox on the laptop: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file

Please note: in the knowledge base, you also will see references to a backup/restore process. Do not use backup/restore for combining different sets of bookmarks as it does a complete wipe before restoring. Only use export/import for combining bookmarks.

The word profile can refer to so many things...

  • Windows data folder: I assume you are logged in under one Windows account, so there is a single Windows profile.
  • Firefox settings folder: I assume you did not create a separate Firefox profile for your wife, exit Firefox to close your profile, and start up in your wife's Firefox profile.
  • Earthlink profile: I'm not familiar with this. Is this an account on the website, or more than that?

Signing in to a website (using a one account or another) should not change Firefox's own menus and toolbars. More specifically, it should not change what Firefox shows on its bookmarks menu in your currently active Firefox profile. These parts of the browser are off limits to websites.

If you have an Earthlink toolbar that is supposed to switch data based on which Earthlink user is logged in, you might want to contact Earthlink support about whether there is a known problem with the toolbar in Firefox.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for your response. We originally had internet explorer as our browser, I use a laptop and my wife uses a pc. both have windows xp. The Earthlink total access is a software we downloaded years ago which gives a homepage format with email access and some other features. The IE toolbar is shown at the top of the page and has a tab for bookmarks. Whenever we switched computers (both have Earthlink access formats for each of us) the screen would show the proper bookmarks for the given sign-in person. Then we changed to Firefox, and it recognized these IE bookmarks, mine on the laptop, and my wife's on the pc. Now I added her sign-in Earthlink setup so she could use the laptop, but the bookmarks on the laptop show my bookmarks and my firefox toolbar. We did not change anything else, and when we had IE this was automatic for whichever of us was signed in to the device via Earthlink account. The bookmark data was already on the laptop for each of us, yet Firefox does not switch it over as IE did. So I wonder why Firefox does not behave as IE did for browser features

Earthlink Total Access or Earthlink Access sounds like a stand-alone program. Due to the way Internet Explorer is designed, it is possible for other companies like Earthlink to embed IE right into their program seamlessly and have control over the interface.

Because Firefox is a separate program not under Earthlink's control, I think unless Earthlink has an add-on for Firefox, you probably have to manage your bookmark as a combined set. You can move them into separate folders (try Ctrl+Shift+b to organize your bookmarks), but you can't easily hide the ones you're not interested in.

Alternately, you can create separate Firefox profiles. Then each of your can have separate bookmarks, themes, add-ons, etc. as well as separate history. Does that sound like it would be a good arrangement?
