I've installed from "firefox-33.0.1.tar.bz2" (28/10/2014). I have installed under /opt/firefox. I am running Mepis 11 / Debian Squeeze (KDE4).

About Firefox was showing "updates available" for a week or two, but the landing page declared "using latest version". 33.0 (not as granular version wise as 33.0.1)

After a few days, popups announce security release and clicking through opens a "server connection attempt". This hangs, but while it is running "about firefox" reports up to date.

So basically to update I have to periodically re-download and check the download against my previous download for a change ?

Remove, and then do a full install. See if that helps.

Unistall on Linux is not much more than delete the Firefox folder and there is no installer on Linux from mozilla.org as it is a tarball archive.

Anyways Firefox 33.0.2 has been the current from mozilla.org and not 33.0.1

One key thing on Linux is make sure the Firefox program folder has read/write permissions for updates to install properly. A easy way around that is making a folder in Home if you are the only user.
