A new tab opens every time I open firefox in addition to the home page, I want to get rid of this tile page altogether. There is no gear icon to click on in the upper right corner of the page

Do you mean the tiles that show on the about:newtab page?

You can check the home page setting in case you have multiple home pages set.

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

When I open firefox, I get two tabs, one with the home page I set, and a second opens with tiles. I don't want that second tab to be there at all. The solutions referenced above have already been tried, there is no options selection under the bars menu, there is no gear icon. Opening the tools and looking at the home page url, there is only the one home page, there is no url for the tiles page, yet it comes up every bloody time I open Firefox anyway. It is on another computer, so I don't have a screenshot.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
