I recently upgraded to Thunderbird Version #38.0.1 and it caused my Chat tab for Google Talk (now called Hangouts) to now not display correctly. All the messages in my Chat tab now show as text boxes per the attached picture. Any idea of how to fix this?

Same problem here as well. Let's compare notes. I have the "MinimizeToTray revived" and "Lightning" extensions, IE totally uninstalled (via the control panel uninstall programs "features" link), and an Amd 280 gpu that's OC'd, latest drivers, HW acceleration on.

Solution for now: looks like by just turning off HW acceleration fixes the issue for me. That's in tools ->options -> advanced and it's the last option there on the "general" tab.

Thanks hey-bud for your reply. I don't have the "MinimizeToTray revived" extension but I do have Lightning extension. I'm not following what you mean by having "IE totally uninstalled (via the control panel uninstall programs "features" link), and an Amd 280 gpu that's OC'd, latest drivers/"

I turned off the HW acceleration as you recommended but that did not fix the problem for me.

Well, to be honest with you, explaining what I wrote earlier won't help you since we appear to have different issues since "HW acceleration off" doesn't affect you -- so I'm not going to attempt it. I don't believe I've found another Thunderbird user like me with my issue, although it's subtle and people probably aren't flocking to support forums unless there's a "huge issue." If my issue also existed in Firefox 38.0.1 and got fixed in 38.0.5, then hopefully the Thunderbird issue will be fixed in 38.0.5 (since that numbering scheme would logically follow.)

Good luck with your issue though.

Just for anyone else looking at this, I just discovered the fix for my problem. I had a "MS Office 2003 JB Edition v3 3.31.5" appearance Add-on installed and enabled in Thunderbird that was causing this problem with my chat window. I changed back to the Thunderfault default appearance theme Add-on and don't have any problems anymore. I believe the "MS Office 2003 JB Edition v3 3.31.5" appearance Add-on was incompatible with the most recent Thunderbird 38.0.1 update I recently did.
