why do i keep getting notification that i need to update firefox when i have the latest version installed?
I just installed Firefox 39.0, I'm pretty sure not for the first time. But I still keep getting the notification: "Looks like you’re using an older version of Firefox." along with the option to "Update to stay safe and fast".
Also, when I check my update history, it says that I haven't ever update Firefox, but when I check "About Firefox" under the help menu, it says I'm using version 39.0 and that "Firefox is up to date".
Confusing. I guess what I am asking though, is how to kill the prompting to update that I keep getting? And to a lesser degree, why do I keep getting it?

Years ago User Agent String (UAS) could be permanently changed by a wide range of software. That is not supposed to happen now other than with software specifically designed to do that for compatibility etc reasons.
Your UAS is
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:28.0; WUID=11d9205c4bcf282ac2bc24d569f81db1; WTB=8131) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0
You do not list your addons, but presumably you are trying to emulate or spoof some other device or software. This article explains how to reset this
If you are not doing this deliberately possibly you have some sort of malware.

John99, thanks so much for your reply. Which was, I must admit, a bit worrying since I don't have any add-ons installed that I think would do this:
Click & Clean Greasemonkey Last Pass Better Privacy Bing Extension Gliph Logitech SetPoint MEGA Nimbus Screen Capture Turkopticon uBlock
What really worries me is that as far as I can recall, I didn't override the UAS deliberately. Anyways, I reset it, and I think that worked. I suppose now I'll start a sweep for malware, though I do that regularly and nothing has popped up recently.
If you don't have anymore thoughts to add to this (actually, regardless of that), thanks very much for your help!
It may have been set a while ago and whatever did it is not there anymore.
Post a new quetion on the forum as a test. Lets see if that now picks up the correct Firefox version ? If the forum picks up the correct version other software should do so too. Please post back here again after you have tried that.
If you have known about the problem for the last year, why isn't there a fix for the problem?
It was fixed by Mozilla a few years ago so that other software (Malware) can't change the UA, but old Firefox Profiles could have the old b0rked pref stuck inside. That has to be fixed by the user, as explained in the hyperlinked support article.
Would you be so kind as to send me a link to that fix so I don't have to go through the agony of finding it?
Thanks very much.
