I have set and confirmed that Firefox is my default browser. I have uninstalled Firefox, rebooted, set Edge as default, rebooted, reinstalled Firefox using the "Make Firefox the default browser" option and rebooted. No matter what settings are made and that Firefox is default, when I click a URL link I get a "How do you want to open this file" dialogue box, Firefox is highlighted, I click the "Always use this app" check box and click OK. Firefox opens and displays the page. Subsequently, every time I click on a URL link I keep getting the pop up and have to select Firefox. It doesn't matter if a session of Firefox is active or Firefox is closed. What am I doing wrong?

This has been a age old problem when trying to set a default browser other than IE (now Edge) on Windows. Firefox has had the most problems over the years trying to get itself set as the default browser. I can't say if Chrome has had the same problem either. But I feel like they have had a difficult time with it too.

In the interest of seeing what works and what doesn't, would you mind installing the Chrome browser and setting it as the default to see if it does in fact remain the default browser when you click any url? Please test opening links quite a few times before saying it works without issue.

I'll be hunting down any workaround for setting Firefox as the default browser in the meantime. But please know that Microsoft is the enemy here. As they want to make Edge the default browser at all costs.

I have tried making it default in Firefox and Control Panel. All settings that exist in Win 10 indicate that Firefox is the DEFAULT browser. I have been using computers since 1970 on an IBM 360. At one time I wrote in machine language. I redesigned the Medicare system to be Y2K complaint. I developed the CODIS system (national DNA database) for the FBI and developed initial prototypes for the computers in cop cars and graphical interface for NCIC. Don't treat me like I'm some dumb ****. I try everything BEFORE I ask a question. So, please tell me what I have done wrong.

Did you check "Always use this app" in your screen capture?

Sorry for any inconvenience that this is causing. In the default programs control panel, can you please try the following:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Search for Default Programs
  3. Click Set Default Programs
  4. Locate Firefox in the sidebar
  5. Click Choose defaults for this program
  6. Add a check mark next the following protocols and extensions:
    • .htm
    • .html
    • .shtml
    • HTTP
    • HTTPS
  7. Then click the Save button

Note: You may have to restart your computer for the changes to take affect.

Read my first submittal. I think I said something to the effect that I had uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and rebooting before proceeding. Yes, I checked the box for always use application. In fact I tested it about 10 times by clicking the URL and every time checking the box to no avail. This has to be something in Win 10. I have had problems with getting direct connected and network connected Canon printer/scanner/fax to work. I have had problems with software apps crashing.

I have 4 monitors and many times I have at least 2 instances of Explorer running each running on a separate monitor. The only reason I stayed with Win 10 is the mouse detects focus on the window displayed on a monitor on hover. In Win 7 I had co click the window when using another monitor and then click on the file.

I have done that procedure. That is the Control Panel configuration changes I first mentioned. I even went to file associations and forced Firefox to be the default for internet related files.

Thanks very much for your effort. My wife has Win 10 and uses Chrome with no problems. I can live with the browser selection pop up.

Firefox worked fine with Win 7. I switched from IE when Webroot proved to me that IE significantly slowed browsing. I retired and no longer need IE for client testing. I like Firefox. It's much faster.

A work around may be moot since MS long term plan is to compete with Android and they are running scared. Android for the desktop will probably be a browser based OS. Android needs to do more work with security and device sharing.

I worry about Google because they are the largest provider of information to the NSA. I have received training from NSA and I know what they are capable of.

Again, I appreciate your help.

I performed a reset of Windows 10. This required me to reinstall all drivers, programs, etc. As a result the problem is now solved. Windows 10 was causing the problems.

Thanks for your feedback. I highly suspected Win 10 was causing problems because I had problems installing the Logitech drivers and I couldn't access my Canon scanner. Having three unsolvable problems pointed me to blame the OS. It was worth the time to do the reset, but it was worth it.
