Hi Mike, Personally I would not even consider downgrading Firefox that is too dangerous.

There must be lot of ad blocking software available. For instance just look at the addons:

• 20+ Million downloads Adblock Plus 2.7.2
  If that had stopped working entirely we would have heard people shouting.

There may be suggestions it is not as effective now. It is always a war between blockers removing adds, and advertisers and site owners trying to make ads unmissable. For news and discussion of that subject try looking on

You have given me some great help here, plus plenty of reading.

The problem was not just the odd add, my whole screen was full of adds, all around plus any empty space in the middle, there are even rolling adds on my Email in-box above the messages, also in the spam folder.

I will try and get the AdBloc 2.7.2 back into working order, though before I posted here, I couldn't install a download of ABP.

I will let you know how I get on.

Sounds more like you may have malware or adware on your computer.

When you are on an ad free* site like our support.mozilla.org do you still get adds or links to ads.

* ad free

Mozillia has snippets, animations etc on the homepage, and tiles/thumbnails on new tab pages. So it has promotional material, but generally just relating to Mozilla and Firefox.

What's the problem with installing ADB (I noticed another post^{/questions/1110778} where an addon would not install, but probably just coincidence )

If Adblock Plus didn't work with Firefox 44, I think we would have seen a lot of screaming on the forum. Unfortunately, I agree with John99 that your computer or at least your Firefox is infected with an ad injector.

Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other hijackers. I know it seems long, but it's really not that bad.

(For Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10; XP is somewhat different)

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

• Ctrl+Shift+a
• "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
• in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
  firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. All extensions are optional; none come with Firefox.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

Also, if this is a brand new installation of Firefox, could you check your download history and see where you got it? Unfortunately, search engines often show ads at the top of the results for unofficial bundles of Firefox with various awful extras. If you got one of those, then I'd suggest this, too:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 44.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(Other systems)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders, but for obvious reasons, don't just copy everything over:

• \OldFirefox\Plugins
• \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

My version of Mozilla FireFox comes from Updates, so there is no problems from other places.

I managed to get Adbloc working, but after only a few minutes, it was back to lots of Ads on every page.

UBloc though has stopped all ads so far, plus another from the list that protects Emails.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.

If I have any other problems with Firefox, this will be the first and hopefully only place that I will come to.
