I have recently moved from a gmail based email to one based on our domain name. I backed up all the email messages received and then changed my settings. The first time I downloaded Thunderbird ALL my emails, folders and subfolders were visible. When I changed my imap settings, they all disappeared. What should I do?

Never ever change an existing IMAP account. It has the effect you observed. Create a new (IMAP) account for your new domain/provider instead. Since you backed up your data prior to changing the account you should be able to restore your existing messages.

The question still remains: HOW do I get back my previously backed up email messages... You have merely told me what I should not have done.

How about changing it back..... then actually exporting the mail instead of leaving it connected to an IMAP account which by it's very design will attempt to synchronize to the mail server and delete the mail because it is not on the server.
