mode changes from Body Text to Paragraph after creating a List

This problem started happening a couple of weeks ago, I _suspect_ after I updated to 52.0+ I reproduced this issue with Thunderbird 52.2.0 .

Reproduce: 1) deselect: Preferences->Composition->"Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default" 2) File->New->Message 3) note: the format mode is "Body Text" 4) go into body, type this: "foo", hit enterKey, "bar", hit enterKey, "asdf" 5) note: cursor still on "asdf" line and format mode is still "Body Text" 6) click the button on the toolbar that has the tooltip "Apply or remove bullet list" 7) hit enterKey, type "narf", hit enterKey 8) note: the cursor is on a 3rd bullet, the format mode is still "Body Text" 9) hit enterKey 10) note: the 3rd bullet has disappeared (expected) and format mode is now "Paragraph" (unexpected)

More than 3 months later Still there in 52.3.0. I did not expect it to be fixed so soon, but, I would like some sort of indication that:

  • "you're wrong, this is expected behavior, here's why, thanks"
  • "you're right, this was broke here, and we have a plan to fix it, thanks"

Anyone from Mozilla try the simple repro from my previous comment? Am I petitioning for a fix in the wrong forum? I understand it's free, and I'll be patient, as long as I can get an old build without the problem. I'll even use git bisect to narrow it down for you, but, I suspect it started happening with 52.0. Just acknowledging the problem would be a huge step for me.

Thanks again for your efforts. This is annoying. Email application is something I use everyday.

I can reproduce exactly as you describe. The source code of the saved draft shows that a 'p' for paragraph has been auto inserted after ending a 'ul' bulletted list.

However, as you used the "Apply or remove bullet list" icon to start the bulletted list, I suggest you use it to end the bulleted list. If you do the following then everything works as expected. 1) deselect: Preferences->Composition->"Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default" 2) File->New->Message 3) note: the format mode is "Body Text" 4) go into body, type this: "foo", hit enterKey, "bar", hit enterKey, "asdf" 5) note: cursor still on "asdf" line and format mode is still "Body Text" 6) click the button on the toolbar that has the tooltip "Apply or remove bullet list" 7) hit enterKey, type "narf", hit enterKey 8) note: the cursor is on a 3rd bullet, the format mode is still "Body Text" 9)click the button on the toolbar that has the tooltip "Apply or remove bullet list" 10) note: the 3rd bullet has disappeared (expected) and format mode is still "Body Text"

It seems it is a long standing bug which no one has taken on to fix. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678618

  1. Thanks for doing the leg work and finding the bug. I created a bugzilla account. Next time I will do due diligence before posting here.
  2. I'm surprised this has been an issue for this long, I only recently noticed it after 52.0 and that was after Mozilla started messing with the default (Body Text vs. Paragraph mode)

Thanks again.

9)click the button on the toolbar that has the tooltip "Apply or remove bullet list"

Thanks for the work around. It is slightly better than clicking Body Text, it saves me one key stroke (don't have to hit Enter to end the list) and have it go into Paragraph mode.

Having said that, it is annoying to have to touch the mouse to put it back to the mode I want. I have "Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default" deselected for a reason, because I do NOT want Paragraph mode.

I think this should be fixed. I do not think Thunderbird should be messing with the mode. Just because I want a bullet list, does not mean I want it to magically change to Paragraph mode.

Thanks again.
