Hi, I created a new BT sub-account 3 days ago. All my old accounts work in Thunderbird, but the new one fails on username and password. I tried deleting the account and recreating it - Thunderbird Mail Account Setup confirms "User name or password invalid".

I tried BT's recommended settings, which actually NEVER work, and also the settings that work OK on every other BT account. BT say that because the web mail works and Thunderbird is 3rd party, I have to pay them £10 a month for 3 months to fix this.

Any solution or simular experience, please?

Thanks, Rob

The error message could mean the actual user name or password is wrong, or the server settings are incorrect. What are your settings? Does the password work when you access the account on webmail?

As I understand it, you can access all subaccounts in webmail with one BT ID password, which may be different from the account password. So, did you create a unique password for the subaccounts?

Thanks for the reply. I tried the settings on that page you linked, but not only did they not work - they have NEVER worked in Thunderbird for me.

My settings are port 110, security setting None, Password transmitted insecurely - which sounds less than ideal, but it's exactly the same as the settings for my other BT accounts, and the only settings that I have ever known to work.

For password and email address I have been copy-pasting them to avoid spelling mistakes. I used the same password for all accounts.

Your old accounts with non-secure settings may be allowed by BT as 'legacy' accounts, but since they don't offer them as options on the page cited above, it may be their policy that new accounts must use the secure settings - which would make sense.

A brief look at the BT forum indicates several users have these settings working in TB:

mail.btinternet.com on port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP) for incoming, on port 465 for outgoing; connection security = SSL/TLS, authentication = normal password, User Name = email address.

Disable your antivirus during setup as they often interfere with secure connections.

Thanks for trying to help.

I changed to the settings you suggested, disabled virus and firewall. Makes bugger-all difference.

I'm going to stop trying for now - give it a few days as I think they sometimes sent information between servers by snail.

I can't promise to view any further replies.

Thanks, again.

I'm with BT I selected to use POP on webmail account I use: Incoming Server name:mail.btinternet.com Port: 995 connection security = SSL/TLS, authentication method: = normal password (same one as used to access webmail account) User Name = full email address.

Outgoing Server name:mail.btinternet.com Port: 465 connection security = SSL/TLS, authentication method: = normal password (same one as used to access webmail account) User Name = full email address.
