I was using Firefox 111.0.0 (64-bit) without any issues, for a few months. I have a few add-ons, but nothing crazy.

Last night I upgraded to 111.0.1 (64-bit). Now, I cannot open any website address at all. Yes, every single internet website is giving me the same error:

Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to xxxxxx. Certificate type not approved for application. Error code: SEC_ERROR_INADEQUATE_CERT_TYPE

I am a home PC user. I do not know anything about certifications and I am not running any custom settings or my own certificates. I am not doing a proxy or anything weird. My other web browsers have no issues.

I have tried: "resetting" Firefox function, removing all my add-ons, setting security.enterprise_roots.enabled, and other things Google search results suggested (from a different browser - like I said i cannot open any web page in Firefox). I can't even open Mozilla help pages that it tries to redirect me to.

I've been a firefox user for a decade but this is beyond frustrating. Please help, or i may just uninstall and move to another browser.

thanks,

I have tried that as well - I deleted the Cert8 file, didnt change anything. It got re-created as expected.

That would have been done again a second time anyway when I did the firefox "reset" function?

thanks

Where did you get Firefox from? Try a different version of Firefox and make sure to install in a different directory. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/#nightly

Are you using a proxy or VPN?

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet, select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.

You can do a malware scan just to be sure.

Sorry but all suggestions were either not applicable or did not work

I had to completely uninstall and reinstall, thus losing all my cookies, saved passwords, etc (I do not sign in with firefox account)

it was a disappointing issue with no solution
